Image of Open Day was a great success!

Humanities

In Humanities students had a chance to see work done by students in History and many enjoyed looking at our year 7 castle models and work produced to commemorate the centenary of World War One. In Geography, students located their home on a local map and identified how they are connected to other places in the world. Visitors to RS examined artefacts from the major world religions.

Performing Arts

The drama theatre was packed with budding young stars as they were treated to a session led by year 11 and 13 students. Parents enjoyed talking to older students not just about the provision of Expressive and Performing arts but about the life of a student at LSA.

Maths

Lots of fun was had in the "Beat Mr Curwen Countdown Challenge"  in the Maths department!

Computing

In Computing Year 6 got an opportunity to see Raspberry Pis in action and learnt how to count to huge numbers using only zeros and ones.  We also had the Student Digital Leaders explaining how they are helping shape technology in the school and sharing their skills with the visitors

P.E

The P.E department offered skill challenges in the sports hall, trampolining in the gym and fitness testing in the P.E lab. All areas were heaving with year 6 students showing off their talents.  We were very impressed and hope many can come and represent the teams at lsa. We were also grateful for the commitment of current students making the evening special.

Music

We held choir and orchestra rehearsals in the hall so that the year 6 students could get a glimpse of what we get up to.

Modern Foreign Languages

Open evening in MFL was very busy.  There were opportunities to sample German Christmas food including Stollen, Lebkuchen and Kekse which had to be asked for in German, and opportunities to speak to staff and students about language learning. Textbooks were available to peruse and a game guessing 'Hello' in each language. There was a lovely atmosphere and a constant flow of visitors. The students who assisted the MFL department on the night were fantastic and a pleasant evening was enjoyed by all.

Design Technology

The Design and Technology department had a range of projects on display as well as some Lateral thinking challenges and in Food and Nutrition a fantastic sensory test allowing students to smell, feel and taste a range of different foods and spices.

Science

Chemistry - investigated the science behind fireworks (zinc demo and flame tests), set a teacher on fire (methane bubbles), using blackberries to test for acids and alkalis, Elephant Toothpaste (done on the Big Bang Theory by Sheldon Cooper), burning £5 notes without destroying the note, torturing jelly babies, hydrogen balloons and some chemistry magic!!!

Biology - we had lots of hands on activities for out visitors to try including: Setting up a microscope slide to view plant cells, using different chemicals to test foods for different nutrients. Heart dissection lead by our six form pupils, Disgusting digestion (A journey of the breakdown of food through the body). Identifying body parts, The nervous system and testing reaction times.

Physics - We had lots of fun building circuits, using energy, investigating smart materials, linear air track & van der graaf generator, looking at light as well as looking at dancing ooblek aka dancing slime!

English

Much fun was had by visiting Y6 pupils as well as Y7 helpers in the English Department. There was a Matilda theme in L1 & free butter beer tasting in L2. L3 saw pirates from Treasure Island whilst a Mad-Hatter's teaparty took place in L4.
Greek myths were told and created in L5, L7 saw performance poetry, H3 featured our Media Revolution and H4 had a war horse being built and mini shortbread war horses being given out.
There was a Dickensian feast in H6 for A Christmas Carol and students in H5 wrote diaries.

We hope all the Year 6 students and their parents who came had a great time and learnt a lot about life at LSA and we look forward to hopefully seeing you all next year!
