We have been selected to judge the 2018 Lancashire Book of the Year Awards, which is the longest running young people's regional book award in the country. It's unusual to have this opportunity for two years running, but we are very grateful and we know our students will enjoy it immensely.

It will involve Year 9 readers tackling a long list of about 85 books in the autumn, whittling the list down to 10 in the spring and finally selecting one winner in the summer. They will meet and debate with other schools in the county, work with UCLAN lecturers and students, write critiques, and finally meet the shortlisted authors at a major event in June. The project starts as a slow burner and slowly builds into a great project and is brilliantly organised by Lancashire Libraries. The award remains one of the few book awards in which young people themselves are solely responsible for choosing both the shortlist and the overall winning book.
