Every time I look in the mirror I am reminded, by the scar on my nose, of the car that knocked me off my bike when I was a teenager. My BMX Burner was left mangled on the curb, and I was left with a broken nose and two black eyes. There was a silver lining as when I arrived battered and bruised at college, I met my wife, who 33 years later is still taking pity on me.
I share this story to warn of the dangers of e-scooters, if 33 years ago I had been on one of them I fear that I may never have had the charmed life that I have enjoyed. Increasingly young people are using e-scooters as a form of transport in the local community and to and from school. I have had to ban their use as they are illegal In the UK, you can only ride a privately owned e-scooter on private land with the landowner's permission; it is illegal to use them on public roads, pavements, or in other public spaces as they are classed as motor vehicles but cannot currently be insured or registered. If we become aware of their use by our students, we will pass their details on to the Police. Can I thank you all for your support in this matter, as always, safety comes first.
